The Eye seemed like it could have been a truly unsettling psychological horror film, but ultimately didn't quite reach its potential due to a lack of originality and substance. The storyline adheres to a recognizable pattern, offering little that feels fresh, which makes the progression fairly easy to anticipate even with some initially interesting developments. The filmmaking is competent; the pacing flows well, and there’s a seamless move into the middle portion. The visuals are noteworthy at times, particularly how it presents shifts between what's real and imagined, and the care put into smaller aspects of the production suggests an effort toward authenticity. Even so, while the imagery works, it isn’t enough to make up for the film’s shortcomings in emotional resonance. Jessica Alba delivers a performance that is adequate, but doesn’t possess the necessary intensity for a psychological horror movie. She brings her usual screen presence, but it doesn't improve upon the script, which already has issues with depth. The other actors are fine, though no one makes a particularly memorable contribution. The writing itself feels rather elementary, creating tension on a superficial level instead of exploring the deeper psychological elements of the narrative. While the sound contributes to the atmosphere, it’s not something that sticks with you afterward. Ultimately, The Eye is agreeable enough, boasting good production values and some unsettling scenes, but it doesn't break new ground or create a significant impact.
