It’s delightfully gaudy and sensationalistic; The Exterminator arrives alongside films like Death Wish, enjoying itself immensely while delivering plenty of bloodshed. The story follows Vietnam veteran John Eastland (Robert Ginty) as he begins a campaign of self-justice after his closest friend is left unable to move due to the actions of some awful people. The movie maintains a consistently grim atmosphere, as Eastland carries out his mission, eliminating unsavory criminals in various disturbing ways. Director and writer James Glickenhaus seems eager to demonstrate how corrupt everything around us has become. Naturally, taking justice into one's own hands is wrong, but Glickenhaus makes it very difficult not to support The Exterminator, given the foulness that permeates the city’s dark side. Trying to intervene with The Exterminator is weary Detective James Dalton (Christopher George), although he spends a lot of time having encounters with Samantha Eggar at the local hospital! He's an excellent character, Dalton—a throwback to classic film noir detectives, both tough and disreputable. Predictably, he’ll be dealing with a conflict of interest. The story occasionally drags, but this is balanced by action sequences that seem inevitable in every scene, and the killings, which were quite shocking for their time, are inventive in a disturbing way. Eggar feels like an obligatory addition and essentially exists only to provide Jimmy with some pleasure, while some of the editing and cinematography aren't particularly impressive. But any issues related to its low budget can be ignored! The Exterminator is direct, shows everything plainly, and doesn’t shy away from its subject matter. It's a fantastic example of Grindhouse horror for those who appreciate such over-the-top displays. 8/10
