This sequel manages to live up to the quality established by Blatty’s initial script! While working my way through the 'Exorcist' film series (I own a DVD set containing both versions of the original and the two prequels I haven’t gotten around to watching yet), I was interested in seeing William Peter Blatty return to directing, after his earlier success with ‘The Ninth Configuration.’ It’s fascinating considering this franchise became so important to him—though I've always enjoyed films he previously co-wrote like 'A Shot in the Dark' and 'The Omega Man.' He delivers a very solid performance again, both as writer and director. The absence of Linda Blair didn’t bother me; I appreciated how the plot shifted to focus on finding an already deceased serial killer—and I’ve been consistently impressed by George C. Scott’s work in genre films ever since classics like 'Dr. Strangelove' and 'The Changeling.' The frightening moments felt authentic, and there was a real sense of suspense and engagement throughout. It made me hope that more installments would have been produced; it truly was that impressive.
