I recently watched this movie, and I didn't enjoy it all that much. While I acknowledge Sam Raimi’s skill and his knack for horror, I feel that his films from the 80s haven’t stood up well over time; they seem very dated now. That really sums up this film. Despite that, it was significant back then—a big box office hit that made a lot of people financially secure and still has a dedicated following, who will likely understand my lack of enthusiasm, I'm sure. The movie is set in a cabin surrounded by woods, where a group of friends encounters the undead, who proceed with the expected carnage. There are many similarities between this film and other zombie movies with similar plots; it seems they all originated from the same basic concept. The script wasn’t clearly the central focus when the filmmakers were putting everything together either. The narrative has problems, and it's the most intense moments that prevent it from being even worse than it is. The final scene is especially graphic and might be upsetting to those who are easily disturbed or prone to feeling nauseous. I have seen other movies featuring Bruce Campbell, and I’ve never been fully convinced by his acting abilities. He's an adequate performer, but he doesn’t strike me as someone with exceptional talent on a national or international level. Here, he simply does what you would expect from a character who is meant to survive—going through the motions and falling into one cliché after another until the end. The rest of the actors are so unremarkable that I won't bother dissecting their performances; they’re mostly just there to be killed off. What this film does well is using practical effects to highlight the various confrontations between the young people and the undead. From the blood, to the strangely colored fluids, and several realistic makeup applications, it serves as an example of pre-CGI makeup and visual effects, achieved through inexpensive but surprisingly believable and resourceful methods. It didn't have enough money for more polished work, and a stronger cast and story would have helped.
