The theme song from the Edward Woodward TV show comes to mind, but you won’t find it in this fairly standard story featuring Denzel Washington. His typically careful preparations are thrown off course by a young man with a rifle. This leads "McCall" to seek medical attention from a doctor named "Enzo" (Remo Girone) in a small Sicilian town that's about to become the focal point of the greedy schemes of "Vincent" (Andrea Scarduzio) and his younger brother, "Marco" (Andrea Dodero). Marco leads a group of thugs who pressure local businesses. It’s inevitable that conflict will arise, and, honestly, you can probably figure out how this drama concludes—it's quite brutally predictable. Dakota Fanning pops up occasionally in an unnecessary subplot concerning the CIA and some Syrian drug traffickers; it feels underdeveloped. Mostly, though, it's just Denzel being Denzel as he tries to protect his new acquaintances from the clutches of a dishonest criminal organization. The film runs longer than necessary, and I thought Washington’s acting felt slow throughout, culminating in an ending that seemed overly simplistic and hurried. It’s acceptable, but not particularly memorable.
