A story about surviving after environmental disaster? Absolutely, I was hooked by this film. It’s not every day you see new mothers portrayed as incredibly resilient characters—and it makes sense, because a mother protecting her child is a force to be reckoned with. When I watch movies, I try to figure out if a woman was involved in the writing process, and I felt certain about this one, which turned out to be true; it was written by two women! Plus, a female director’s debut feature—fantastic! I can usually tell when women are telling their own stories. The connection between Comer and Waterston was wonderful. I hadn't seen the latter actress before, but her performance has made me want to explore her other roles. They both deserved their parts and didn’t depend on looks at all in these performances. Women who write well understand female characters. And there are really adorable babies—they're the perfect age, around four or five months old; so huggable! I suggest everyone check this one out.
