As a significant storm unfolds outside, a woman nearing her due date (Jodie Comer) is at home watching television. A power outage and the onset of labor trigger a series of difficulties, beginning with the effort to reach the hospital with her boyfriend (Joel Fry). Upon leaving, they find that large portions of England are submerged, prompting them to seek refuge at his parents’ house in higher ground. The family had previously prepared for such an eventuality, so there's ample food available, although not much else, as familial bonds and broader societal structures begin to unravel. The couple becomes separated, and the mother must now secure safety for herself and her newborn until some semblance of order is restored. Jodie Comer delivers another deeply affecting performance, supported by a brief but impactful appearance from Benedict Cumberbatch and solid work from Katherine Waterson. The plot evoked comparisons to "Children of Men" (2006). It’s an undeniably bleak and somber account—interspersed with recollections of more pleasant times—depicting how people confront catastrophe, whether brought on by their own actions or external forces. I found it difficult to stay invested as the story progressed at a slow pace. The direction and musical score also felt underwhelming. There were numerous scenes featuring vehicles traveling through flooded areas, the mother carrying her baby, comforting her baby, breastfeeding her baby—and conversations about the baby; time certainly seemed to pass quickly. If intended as a very personal, intimate critique of humanity's cruelty when facing dire circumstances, it’s somewhat effective, but other aspects felt misapplied, I must admit.
