I recently watched this movie, which was shown at the London Film Festival having just been upgraded to 4K, and seeing it again highlighted its considerable strengths. Beyond the noticeable enhancements in picture clarity and resolution, I realized once more how impressive it truly is. Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft both deliver performances marked by a genuine sense of feeling – wonderfully complemented by Sir John Gielgud and Dame Wendy Hiller. Setting aside the makeup effects, John Hurt portrays Merrick’s sadness and hope with a sensitive approach; and Freddie Jones is simply chilling as "Bytes." His son was present at the screening, and I found myself thinking about what he must have felt seeing his father's work – perhaps a mixture of admiration for the acting and revulsion toward the character. The film isn’t shown frequently these days, but it remains remarkably effective even after nearly 40 years, and is genuinely an excellent piece of cinema.
