It’s remarkable how thoroughly this movie explores the development of two characters and their connection across four decades. The considerable runtime doesn't feel excessive; the rhythm feels precisely suited to portraying the profound affection people can share. "In certain lives, there are mountains to which we may never return. That in lives like his and mine, you cannot go back to the mountain that is in the center of all the rest, and at the beginning of your own story. And that wandering around the eight mountains is all that remains." I regret not having read the book beforehand; I did glance at the introduction, and Paolo Cognetti’s prose seems lyrical and graceful. I intend to read it eventually. This serves as a wonderful illustration of a critically acclaimed novel being adapted into an equally impressive film.
