I have to say I found this adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff's "The Eagle of the Ninth" to be rather good. Channing Tatum portrays “Marcus Aquila,” who is the son of a commander in the 9th legion, which disappeared in what is now Scotland during the 2nd Century AD. Driven by a desire to clear his father’s name, he and his slave "Esca" (played by Jamie Bell) embark on a quest to find the Eagle – the golden emblem that belonged to the Roman army. It's a brisk adventure film with an appealing score composed by Atli Örvarsson, which enhances their journey through rough terrain as they hunt for this important symbol. There’s a noticeable connection between Tatum and Bell, and the outdoor scenery is beautifully shot. Tahar Rahim delivers a solid performance as the tough and unrelenting leader of the Seal people, and Ned Dennehy also makes an impression, even though he's only in a few scenes, playing his somewhat unstable father. Mark Strong shows up occasionally as well, although with what seems like a completely pointless American accent! It’s an enjoyable way to spend some time.
