This 1977 World War II movie takes a decidedly different approach. Michael Caine delivers an exceptional performance as Colonel Steiner, a German paratroop leader who’s tasked with a secret mission: to travel to Britain and abduct Winston Churchill during a period of rest. Donald Sutherland portrays Liam Devlin, an Irishman who assists the Germans by facilitating their operation in a small coastal village—filmed on location in Cornwall and Berkshire, England. Jenny Agutter appears as Devlin's romantic interest, a young woman living in the village, while Larry Hagman and Treat Williams portray American officers, one of whom is portrayed as overly enthusiastic. Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence also appear in supporting roles as German officials. The storyline makes it clear that this isn’t your standard World War II film; it avoids the usual large-scale battles and predictable characters and scenarios common to many war movies. Both Caine and Sutherland are impressive, with Caine particularly noteworthy for his portrayal of the courageous Steiner. There are several scenes that stick with you. The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes, but it doesn't feel as long as that. GRADE: B+/A-
