The premise held promise: a refined historical film recounting the life of Georgiana (Keira Knightley), who found herself in an unfulfilling union with the rich and powerful Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes). She’s essentially reduced to a status not unlike that of a breeding animal, despite possessing a considerable amount of self-reliance, which naturally leads her into a romantic entanglement with Dominic Cooper, referred to as "Earl Grey." Simultaneously, the Duke maintains his own extramarital relationship, and the movie explores how these complex arrangements unfold. The narrative highlights the restricted options available to women in 18th Century Britain – irrespective of their social standing – but I found the portrayals somewhat lacking in depth, with only a few fleeting scenes featuring Charlotte Rampling providing any real spark. Visually, it’s an impressive production; the grand estates are showcased beautifully, however, ultimately, the film prioritizes aesthetics over meaningful content.
