Is this an attempt at a Hail Mary? Something beyond repair? Michael R. Roskam directed The Drop, which was written by Dennis Lehane, who adapted it from his own short story, Animal Rescue. It features Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts; the score is composed by Marco Beltrami and Nicolas Karakatsanis handled the cinematography. Bob Saginowski (Hardy), a bartender in Brooklyn, sees a chance at something better—but only if he can break away from his family connections, the criminal activity around him, and a troubling history. It's hard to suggest this film with certainty because it doesn’t quite fit into standard crime movie territory. It's primarily about a few characters whose lives are impacted by crime, and how they become entangled in events stemming from illegal actions. Roskam isn't rushing to showcase the story’s literary merits; he prefers a deliberate, understated style. He skillfully builds an atmosphere while also making sure that viewers feel immersed in the environment and circumstances—something Lehane achieves exceptionally well in his books. By the time the film reveals its secrets, what seemed like unnecessary complications become meaningful and successfully resolve the narrative. 7.5/10
