Many people will recognize the phrase “You think you know somebody,” which often expresses disappointment when we discover something deceptive about someone that contradicts our assumptions about their character. Such revelations can be deeply upsetting, especially when they involve those close to us and reveal shocking truths. So, what happens when someone learns a disturbing fact about their fiancé just days before their wedding? How does this affect the ceremony itself, not to mention the prospect of a lifetime together? That’s the central question in this new dark comedy-drama from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli. As Charlie (Robert Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) finalize wedding plans while having drinks with Rachel (Alana Haim), the matron of honor, and Michael (Mamoudou Athie), the best man, a casual conversation unexpectedly leads to a revealing disclosure by the bride-to-be after she’s had too much to drink. To elaborate would spoil things, but it's clear that Emma’s unplanned admission throws everything into disarray – the ceremony, the wedding party’s involvement, and even the couple’s future together. As the consequences unfold and become more intense, viewers see flashbacks of the bride as a younger girl (Jordyn Curet), which raise further questions and create various complications. Throughout this, the story explores ideas about judgment, making amends, and forgiveness from different, sometimes opposing viewpoints. It also holds up a mirror to each character, exposing their true nature. This prompts introspection and raises questions about who has the right to judge others. That's where “the drama” of "The Drama" lies, but it’s handled in a way that isn’t entirely bleak. Much of the story relies on dry humor and clever satire, with a frankness that might make some audience members feel uncomfortable. As a result, this film may not sit well with everyone, particularly because its subject matter could resonate too closely with personal experiences. However, that's to be expected from a filmmaker who often draws upon such themes, as demonstrated in his previous work, the exceptionally well-made “Dream Scenario” (2023). Borgli has arguably surpassed even that achievement here, thanks to superb performances from the excellent cast (particularly Pattinson and Zendaya), sharp writing, inventive plot twists, and skillful editing. The film’s provocative scenes are infused with themes reminiscent of Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (1989) and staging similar to Bernhard Wenger’s “Peacock” (“Pfau – bin ich echt?”) (2024), placing it in good company. I will concede that “The Drama” won’t be for everyone, but those who appreciate its bold qualities are certain to be captivated by this insightful production, filled with pathos, self-reflection, and moments of guilty laughter—the kind of film you won't soon forget, and one that might leave us all feeling a bit more regretful.
