As they approach their wedding day in just one week, 'Emma' (Zendaya), who has hearing loss, and 'Charlie' (Robert Pattinson) seem anxious. They’re still working out the details when they gather with friends 'Rachel' (Alana Haim) and her husband 'Mike' (Mamoudou Athie) to tackle the challenge of choosing the menu. The mushroom risotto appears to be a good choice, although I’m not sure what was so bad about his suggestion for a cheeseburger, and then they move on to discussing wine. After having a bit too much, they start a game that leads 'Emma' to share something from her past, which surprises everyone present. What follows shows how the couple has to confront the emotional fallout of this disclosure, and we begin to question whether they will actually go through with the wedding. While some situations feel somewhat forced, there are definitely moments that had me laughing out loud—particularly when they talk about their photography plans. Zendaya and Pattinson have a great chemistry together, effectively conveying their growing unease to the audience. Her revelation, along with some fairly amusing pre-wedding nerves, creates an enjoyably dark comedy filled with social commentary, a mild criticism of affluent thirty-somethings, and humorous observations about reactions, overreactions, and the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. The film does have its lulls, and I wasn’t particularly impressed by the conclusion, but it offers a unique perspective on how easily loving relationships can be disrupted, and also serves as a reminder that if you want to strike up a conversation with someone about their book, you should probably read it first!
