The Djinn is another take on the familiar cautionary tale—be careful what you wish for—echoing Wilde’s observation about tragedy. It's a strange combination, feeling like Home Alone blended with Wishmaster. Dylan Jacobs, played by Ezra Dewey, is a boy who can’t speak and has asthma, which inevitably leads to moments of desperate searching for his inhaler. The chances of encountering a genie, particularly one fluent in sign language, seem slim; but surprisingly, they are quite high. Dylan discovers an antique mirror and an accompanying book detailing how to summon a supernatural being. The ritual requires placing three drops of blood on a candle flame and stating your wish before a mirror just before midnight—that’s when the genie will fulfill it. Before that point, however, we're subjected to a musical sequence that doesn’t add anything meaningful while pushing the film past eighty minutes. Dylan neglects to fully understand the rules, and as a result, he is terrorized by an evil entity capable of impersonating deceased individuals. The story unfolds in 1989—the reason for this setting remains unclear. Perhaps co-directors and co-writers David Charbonier and Justin Powell intended to prevent Dylan from using modern devices to seek help, but given that the genie also blocks his ability to leave the house or reach out to anyone, it’s questionable how an iPad would have actually been useful.
