Lee Marvin is tasked with bringing together a group of criminals and disreputable individuals to form a functioning military force, with the goal of demolishing a fortified estate used as a retreat by important Nazi officials. The undertaking seems insurmountable from the start, given the collection of misfits—a truly remarkable assortment of cowards, violent offenders, and fanatics; but with the help of his quiet sergeant (Richard Jaeckel), he manages to enlist the eccentric Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson, Sonny Bono, Jim Brown, and a decidedly shady John Cassavetes in his effort. The film is generally enjoyable, featuring ample humor that helps maintain momentum throughout. Perhaps it runs on longer than necessary, but it’s an effective war action movie with a satisfying finish.
