This film really resonated with me. It ranks among the best work of Joseph H. Aldrich, although perhaps "Kiss Me Deadly" remains my top choice. The performances from Lee Marvin and John Cassavetes are exceptional; Cassavetes received nominations for Best Supporting Actor at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards for his contribution to this project. It felt like a return to an era when combining talented actors with skilled directors almost ensured a quality result, largely due to minimal involvement from studio executives, which often led to genuinely classic films. While some believed that the studio system needed reform, exemplified by movies such as "Easy Rider," Aldrich's films from this period, including this one, seem to endure and stand the test of time considerably better than Hopper’s acclaimed film and others like it.
