Wuchak on The Diabolical Dr. Z

7/10 · Dec 5, 2025

This Spanish-French film, a project from Jess Franco, brings together the atmosphere of classic black and white mystery/horror movies like “Night Tide” and “Carnival of Souls,” along with elements reminiscent of "Frankenstein," creating an interesting kind of European horror. There’s also a touch of the unusual feel you find in films such as "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies," although this one isn't presented in color. It seems to represent Franco at his best when working on lower-budget productions. Several attractive actresses appear, including Lucía Prado (as Barbara), Mabel Karr (who plays Irma Zimmer), and Estella Blain (credited as Miss Death), along with a few other performers in smaller roles. The film’s length is 1 hour and 27 minutes, and it was produced by Hesperia Films, based in Madrid, and Spéva Films and Ciné Alliance, which are located in Paris. GRADE: B+
