The presence of two major stars might suggest a gripping film, but instead, this thriller falls flat, failing to deliver any real excitement. The plot revolves around police officer "O'Meara," portrayed by Harrison Ford, who provides lodging for an Irish man named "Devaney," played by Brad Pitt—complete with a somewhat comical Irish accent. From the beginning, it’s clear that the lodger is actually an IRA terrorist using a false identity, and his host slowly starts to suspect something isn't right. What follows is a poorly developed storyline that lays out clues for the audience leading to an ending that, while occasionally tense, ultimately proves unremarkable. As someone from Britain, I’ve always struggled with these kinds of suspense films that depict terrorists as heroic figures fighting for liberation, and this narrative leans heavily into tired clichés. There's very little action to be found, and the film progresses at a slow pace, offering minimal stimulation. The plot feels too straightforward, and politically, it presents an entirely biased viewpoint, which makes the entire experience feel empty for both of the leads. While Pitt is visually striking, the movie isn’t particularly memorable and doesn't offer any real insight into the complicated issues facing Ireland.
