I’d previously liked Donna Deitch’s earlier film 'Desert Hearts', and I thought Kirsten Dunst and Brittany Murphy were wonderful in 'Melancholia' and 'Sin City'. However, the idea of a made-for-TV movie using time travel to tell the story of a privileged Jewish teen learning about her background struck me as an unusual and interesting attempt. It was something completely unlike anything I’d seen before. Even though I don’t have any connection to Jewish traditions—just like with Deitch's previous work—I could still find merit in it, although if forced to choose, I would still pick her earlier film. It’s disappointing to see that this San Francisco native, who is now 71, has mostly been working on TV shows since then, based on what’s listed on her IMDb page.
