It’s rare to encounter movies from the period after the Hays Code that stick with you, but the collaborations between Marlene Dietrich and Josef Von Sternberg consistently manage to do just that, and this one is certainly among them. It was fortunate that Dietrich kept it in her personal collection because it was her favorite film, as it had been withdrawn from circulation due to objections from the Spanish government regarding how Pierre Louÿs’ novel depicted their police force—they even went so far as to destroy the original negative. Because of Dietrich's concern that the film would otherwise disappear, a very good copy survived, and I have enjoyed watching it myself as part of an excellent DVD set containing six of her movies which I bought some time ago. While I generally favor Von Sternberg’s silent films—he received Academy Award nominations for "Morocco" and "Shanghai Express"—this story of revenge is also outstanding and deserves to be both acquired and viewed repeatedly.
