The danger in this movie mostly arises from someone off-screen swinging a plastic bat attached to a fishing rod, yet despite its absurdity, the film manages to convey a message. It centers on the clever scientist "Carruthers" (Bela Lugosi), who feels he was overlooked by his colleagues after they profited greatly from an invention he initially capitalized on. To get back at them, he created something that looks like an aftershave but is actually highly alluring to a giant bat. Predictably, no one lives through meeting this creature, and before long the police and media are investigating as bodies accumulate. The remainder of the story follows familiar drive-in movie conventions, though I appreciated its jab at scientists who fabricate information when they lack understanding. It’s undeniably simple throughout, but Lugosi carries the entire low-budget bat picture along nicely for a reasonably enjoyable hour.
