A complete waste of space, overblown, and foolish. Jean Yarbrough directed The Devil Bat, which George Bricker and John T. Neville wrote. Bela Lugosi, Suzanne Kaaren, Dave O’Brien, Donald Kerr, and Gary Usher are in the cast. This is what comes from Poverty Row! It's a PRC production that manages to be both crazy and enjoyable. The story involves Lugosi as a frustrated cosmetic chemist who feels he hasn’t been properly compensated by the company using his creations. He then starts raising giant bats in a hidden lab, intending for them to eliminate anyone who uses an aftershave lotion he distributed – essentially targeting those he believes have wronged him. As people start dying and the media creates a frenzy around a “devil bat,” reporters Henry Layden (O’Brien) and "One Shot McGuire" try to find out where all this terror is coming from. The film's cheap production value is noticeable in things like the props and sets, but at just over an hour long, it gets through its story quickly with a relaxed attitude that’s pretty great. Lugosi seems to be enjoying himself, switching between near-madness and sly villainy while showing a bit of humor, and naturally there are large, frightening bats that screech before going after the women. It's wonderful! The shortcomings are clear throughout—Lugosi is overshadowed by the journalists’ mix of courage and silliness—but as a way to pass the time, and among Lugosi’s Poverty Row horror films, it's hard not to like this and have fun with it. 6/10
