In the isolated communities of West Virginia and southern Ohio during the mid-1960s, a number of individuals’ paths intersect around an orphaned young man (Tom Holland) who is committed to safeguarding those he cares about. “The Devil All the Time” (2020) unfolds as a deliberately paced Southern Gothic psychological drama that incorporates crime elements reminiscent of "Undertow" (2004), alongside the somber atmosphere found in films like “Winter’s Bone” (2010), “Mud” (2012), “Joe” (2013) and “1922” (2017). The narrative focuses on profound questions about existence, such as humanity's capacity for cruelty, the occurrence of death at a young age, unanswered prayers, misinterpretations of religious beliefs, the rationalization of wrongdoing, corrupt officials, the progression of a life of crime, divine retribution—regardless of whether it’s recognized—hope and, possibly, the chance for redemption. Some have suggested that the film lacks purpose, but this isn't accurate. It may wander and remain unclear at times, but it is not without meaning. Viewers should be prepared for a slow-moving drama featuring flawed characters, extensive narration (from the book’s author), shifts in time, intricate storytelling, and an understated emotional resolution. One thing to keep in mind is that the story doesn't truly grab hold until roughly the final 50 to 55 minutes. The movie does not mock Christians, contrary to some criticisms, but instead portrays how certain people struggling with mental health issues might misinterpret religious texts or spiritual guidance and exploit their positions for personal gain rather than helping others. There are unsettling and disturbing scenes that can be deeply upsetting, though the author drew inspiration from actual events. It’s a well-made film, featuring believable performances, costumes, sets, and locations, but the dark and pessimistic storyline won't appeal to all audiences.
