Get yourselves out there! Robert Wise directed The Desert Rats, with a script by Richard Murphy. It features Richard Burton, Robert Newton, Robert Douglas, Torin Thatcher, Chips Rafferty and James Mason, accompanied by music from Leigh Harline and cinematography by Lucien Ballard. Coming after The Desert Fox—though it isn’t really a sequel—this film seems to have been made partly as a response to criticisms leveled at the earlier movie for portraying Field Marshal Rommel too favorably. Wise directs this depiction of the battle of Tobruk, keeping the story straightforward but developing the characters considerably; Burton and Newton are particularly good in their roles. This significant episode from the war is handled with seriousness, and the combat scenes feel authentic, while the intelligence displayed by Allied commanders gets proper recognition. It’s disappointing that Mason has so little screen time, especially considering the lengthy scene he shares with Burton—a real treat for British film enthusiasts. However, it's worth remembering that this isn’t a completely accurate historical account, so anyone studying Tobruk shouldn't rely on it for research. Regardless, it's a well-made war movie. 7/10
