On a whim, I chose to watch 'The Departed' to mark the Summer Solstice. I’d always been fond of the original Hong Kong films, 'Infernal Affairs,' which this movie adapts. Typically, I dislike it when acclaimed international movies are recreated, but in this instance, that wasn't an issue at all. There was some disagreement surrounding its many Academy Awards, especially Scorsese’s long-awaited win for directing, but it shouldn't detract from the fact that it's one of his very best films. I have a general principle when considering remakes, particularly those made in America based on foreign movies: 1. Director? (yes) 2. Cast? (yes) 3. Script? (yes) As they say, 'the proof is in the pudding!'
