Delta Damage! Menahem Golam directed Delta Force, with Golam and James Bruner writing the screenplay together. The film features Chuck Norris, Lee Marvin, Joey Bishop, Robert Forster, George Kennedy, Robert Vaughn, and Shelley Winters. Alan Silvestri composed the music, and David Gurfinkel handled the cinematography. The movie is a very free adaptation of the actual TWA Athens hijacking that occurred in 1985, presented with a distinctly fantastical Hollywood approach. It marked the final film appearance for veteran actor Lee Marvin, who unfortunately died a year later; it wasn’t really a memorable way to end his career. Everything seemed to be in place: a well-known cast led by one of the biggest action stars of the 1980s and a topical story that was perfect for serious drama and excitement. Unfortunately, the film doesn't live up to its potential for something meaningful. However, if you enjoy action movies and aren’t bothered by political correctness, slogans, or obvious displays of patriotism, there is plenty of entertainment to be found. Stripped away from any political messaging, it functions as a Norris cartoon, while Marvin gets one last good paycheck. The action sequences are well-executed, completely over the top, and especially enjoyable when Norris is leading the charge. Whether he’s engaging in hand-to-hand combat or participating in motorcycle stunts (complete with rocket launchers!), it's all exuberantly fun. There’s a lot of silliness on display, particularly once the initial human drama of the first hour fades into macho rampaging. Silvestri’s musical score is irritating and annoyingly memorable—it sounds more suitable for an 80s Brat Pack film. It’s also disappointing to see Marvin looking so unwell; clearly affected by years of nicotine and alcohol, this isn't how one would want to remember him, and it feels like a responsibility not to. Despite its shortcomings, overlook the flaws and enjoy the ridiculous thrills because there is still some fun to be had here. That is, if you’re inclined toward movies like this in the first place! 6/10
