I had anticipated “The Deliverance,” Lee Daniels’ new film, with considerable excitement, hoping for an effective horror movie experience. It didn't quite live up to those expectations. The director seemed to depend on familiar demonic imagery—things we’ve encountered many times before—which made the story feel commonplace and lacking in originality. Even though the actors involved were clearly very talented, the production appeared to be hampered by budgetary limitations, ultimately producing an exorcism film that felt more disheartening than frightening. It's disappointing because Daniels possesses the ability to produce something fresh within horror, but “The Deliverance” didn’t manage to realize that possibility.
