The film *The Deliverance* possesses an interesting storyline but struggles because of an unsuccessful effort to merge intense family issues with bizarre supernatural elements. The movie seemed destined to be impactful on a deeper level, yet it slowly devolves into something uncomfortable and occasionally funny by accident. Even though Andra Day and Glenn Close give performances that stand out, Lee Daniels doesn’t manage to establish the kind of environment or keep the story flowing smoothly needed for a truly memorable tale. It felt like the movie could have resonated more strongly had it chosen a simpler, less predictable path. Rating: D+
