The film begins with "Joker" (Tony Curtis) and "Cullen" (Sidney Poitier) connected in restraints on a prison transport bus when the vehicle crashes. Recognizing an opportunity, they decide to escape, despite their obvious dislike for one another, intending to catch a train. During their flight, they slowly begin to develop respect—and even fondness—for each other before reaching a small farm where they meet the woman (Cara Williams) and her young son "Billy" (Kevin Coughlin). It soon becomes apparent that she has developed feelings for "Joker," so she devises a scheme: she’ll drive “Joker” and her son away in one direction while "Cullen" goes off on his own towards the railway through the swamp. The setup seems promising, but when "Joker" realizes there are serious dangers inherent in this plan for his former partner, he finds himself facing difficult decisions—decisions that will affect everyone involved, particularly as Sheriff “Muller” (Theodore Bikel), who is well-intentioned but persistent, and the less principled "Capt. Gibbons" (Charles McGraw) pursue them. At its heart, this movie relies on the chemistry between two actors who complement each other effectively, using a compelling—and occasionally funny—narrative to explore how a need for survival can evolve into something strengthened by growing affection. Both characters have shortcomings and prejudices, but their experiences ultimately highlight the futility of such traits; that message is reinforced by the character of the honorable “Muller” and others they meet along their journey seeking freedom. The film confronts political and racial themes with impact, avoiding any lecturing and instead offering a chance to recognize how trivial and foolish some of our ingrained beliefs can be. It's definitely something you should see.
