The film possesses undeniable visual flair but ultimately feels hollow. It's clear that The Deep aimed to capitalize on the enormous popularity of Jaws from a couple of years prior. Though penned by Jaws author Peter Benchley, the story doesn’t quite come across as intended in this adaptation, and it remains firmly within the realm of conventional adventure fare. Initially, things seemed promising; the first hour is genuinely captivating, maintaining viewer interest with elements like shipwrecks, buried treasure, voodoo practices, a beautiful setting, Robert Shaw's intense performance, and Jacqueline Bisset’s appearance in a wet t-shirt! However, the film soon descends into predictable patterns and fizzles out anticlimactically. While pleasing to the eye—particularly the underwater scenes—and featuring adequate performances from the main cast, a wandering subplot involving drugs leaves one hoping that a large shark would appear, consume the entire movie, and then release it again with more energy and feeling. 5/10
