"The Dead Pool" doesn’t reach the same degree of acclaim or widespread appeal that "Sudden Impact" (1983) enjoyed, and it's not hard to see why. While "Sudden Impact" features considerable violence—a constant stream of shootings and assaults seemingly without purpose—it also possesses a certain energy; you get the impression the performers are eager to be involved. That feeling is absent here. "The Dead Pool" frequently comes across as something of an unpleasant obligation, one that Clint Eastwood seems determined to complete swiftly and effectively, presumably to satisfy Warner Brothers and perhaps generate another substantial profit for them. Despite this pervasive sense of weariness, it remains a reasonably engaging and diverting way to spend some time.
