The basic idea was appealing, but the way it played out felt disappointing. The story begins with a rocket arriving on Mars, only for it to explode unexpectedly. Back on Earth, the project’s leader, "Dr. Fielding" (Kent Taylor), is perplexed by this failure and returns home to his family. His marriage to "Claire" (Marie Windsor) has deteriorated significantly due to his years spent devoted to his mission and all the missed holidays. She's presented as someone from a privileged background, and they—along with their children, "Judi" (Betty Beall) and "Rocky" (Gregg Shank)—find themselves at their country estate where unsettling things begin to happen. People seem to be in multiple locations simultaneously, and strange accidents start taking place. The film does eventually reveal the reason behind these events: a clever scheme devised by the inhabitants of Mars who have their own methods for handling unwanted visitors. However, director Maury Dexter doesn’t develop this more fascinating element very effectively. Mostly, it comes across as a constrained family drama supported by some unsteady visual effects. It's comparable to reading a science fiction comic book filled with dialogue but lacking in visuals—and the pacing does suffer before reaching a rather hasty conclusion. I wouldn’t recommend watching it.
