The scientist “Jack Hall,” portrayed by Dennis Quaid, attempts to alert people to an approaching catastrophe—an extreme ice storm resulting in freezing temperatures, massive tsunami-like waves, and widespread snowfall that threatens society. Complicating matters for him is his son, "Sam" (Jake Gyllenhaal), who finds himself stuck in New York City. While the film relies heavily on computer-generated imagery, and the storyline feels familiar and unrealistic, this is to be anticipated given it’s a disaster movie. Jake Gyllenhaal is pleasant to watch, and his experiences are slightly more engaging than those of his father as he makes his way from Washington. The narrative possesses a sincerity that borders on ridiculousness, and the final address delivered by President "Becker" (Kenneth Welsh) feels somewhat corny. Fortunately, there’s no romantic element; it's a direct and enjoyable disaster film. Although excessively long, it is reasonably worthwhile to view.
