It’s definitely worth watching, and I found it surprisingly impactful, especially coming from an American production. The filmmakers portray the complete nuclear conflict between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, showing its effects on people living in and near Kansas. I believe *TDA* functions best as a straightforward movie because that's what it is. In contrast to "Threads," which was made in the UK and feels more like a documentary-drama, *TDA* establishes the setting and develops the characters. A number of the people featured also live through the initial attack, and we see their experiences two to four weeks afterward. Although *TDA* faced criticism for being inappropriate at the time and is quite dark and frightening, it does stumble into the pitfall of feeling like a movie rather than a film intended to shock and present information objectively. Some of the dialogue and characters are a bit cheesy—the romantic storylines and family dramas especially—and feel underwhelming. *Threads* has similar elements, but manages to steer clear of the most contrived moments, seeming more genuine than acted out. Regardless, *TDA* is effective; it will hold your attention and you’ll likely be affected by the buildup, the attack sequence, and what follows. The acting is generally very good, and the film moves along smoothly through the narrative. What I don't like so much about *TDA* is that it doesn't fully explore the repercussions of a nuclear exchange, instead offering a somewhat optimistic perspective—that things will get better eventually and humanity will endure. Dr. Oakes, one of the primary characters, probably expresses the most realistic views on what’s ahead, but those opinions aren't presented as representing the film's overall message. It remains a highly recommended film; it addresses a subject that is handled properly by this movie and the UK-made *Threads*.
