The passing of the previous emperor brings a new, more unpleasant "Skeksis" to power, initiating another period of fear for the "Gelfling" inhabitants of the faraway world of "Thra." The only solution lies in repairing the dark crystal, which suffered damage long ago, and this restoration can occur only during the alignment of their planet's three suns. This difficult mission now rests with the hesitant "Jen" and his companion "Kira," who embark on a sequence of dangerous journeys to find the crystal and transport it to the temple so that it may be revitalized and overcome the vulture-like beings. It’s an engaging narrative about the conflict between good and evil, featuring Jim Henson's remarkable creations generating a palpable sense of threat, albeit in a style reminiscent of stage entertainment. I found myself less invested in the human characters – they seemed rather frail; however, the monsters are wonderfully detailed and imaginative, and the vibrant visuals effectively enhance the story while creating an atmosphere of intrigue and hazard. There’s a good amount of action and mystical elements present, and even though I disliked the fairly standard happy ending, I did find the film enjoyable overall. Its age is noticeable, but that didn't detract too significantly from my experience.
