Datapotomus on The Dark Crystal

4.5/10 · Mar 3, 2016

I went into this film with higher expectations than it ultimately met. I had believed it would be quite enjoyable, especially given its status as one of Jim Henson's more recognized works. The narrative, though, didn’t really capture my attention. Perhaps that’s because we’ve seen so many films following a similar formula now—the tale of an orphaned protagonist who rises to become the hero. That particular storyline has been explored extensively, and I don’t find that argument convincing. It's often suggested that older movies are worthwhile simply because they were made in a different era, even if their central themes have since been perfected by later films. However, I think a film can still be good even when it shares basic plot elements with more successful entries in its genre. This one didn’t strike me as particularly unique beyond the fact that it utilized puppets. The use of puppets shouldn't be the primary reason to watch something; instead, those puppets should serve to enhance the storytelling. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but I wouldn’t describe it as good either. It landed squarely in the middle—a perfectly average movie experience.
