CinemaSerf on The Danish Poet

The film centers on an aspiring poet experiencing creative block. His doctor proposes a trip to Norway as a remedy—a more affordable option than France. He travels there and encounters a farmer whose distant relative, twelve generations back, happens to be the very poet he’s trying to emulate. During his stay at the farm, he becomes captivated by the farmer's daughter, though she is betrothed to someone else. This forces him to return home feeling disheartened. She makes a promise not to cut her hair until they are reunited; it requires the intervention of both a cow and a deceased poet—separately—for them to finally meet. These events lead to further fortunate occurrences and allow the storyteller to explain how seemingly unrelated events can be surprisingly linked. It's an enjoyable animated film, featuring uncomplicated line-drawn characters and a well-constructed, amusing narrative that combines Liv Ullman’s narration with lighthearted commentary on rural life, tourism, mortality, and customs. I do wonder if it portrays the Norwegian postal service in the best possible light, though.
