"The Dam" functions as much as a political commentary as it does a zombie horror film. Considering the movie's creation during the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, its tone is predictably political, leaning in favor of Ukraine’s position while criticizing Russia’s actions. This perspective is admittedly oversimplified, but that’s the nature of things. Putting aside the propagandistic elements, how does it fare as a film? It's not bad, actually. The narrative about a Soviet underground laboratory where individuals were subjected to experimentation and transformed into zombie-like weapons is quite interesting. The creature designs and environment create an appropriately unsettling and atmospheric feel. However, the action sequences could have benefited from more refinement; they seem somewhat slow and lacking in intensity. This ultimately lessens the feeling of danger and suspense that the film requires. Despite this, the story remains fairly enjoyable, featuring some inventive plot developments to hold your attention. Overall, it's a decent, though not outstanding, zombie action movie from Ukraine. It’s worth checking out.
