The film seemed to possess everything needed for success, even featuring Paul Bettany in a role that suggested inner turmoil, yet something went wrong. The narrative began promisingly with his character committing an unexplained killing within the Louvre. The deceased turned out to be a museum curator whose body was marked with ancient symbols, prompting law enforcement to enlist “Sophie” (Audrey Tautou) for assistance. She subsequently brought in renowned American academic “Langdon” (Tom Hanks) to decipher the meaning behind these events, and they quickly found themselves caught up in the schemes of an old organization with origins tracing back to early Christianity. As they attempted to evade those pursuing them—individuals with extensive ties within French society and government—they began to suspect that the Holy Grail was the ultimate objective, leading their journey, aided by “Sir Leigh Teabing” (Sir Ian McKellen), to a burial site in London supposedly linked to the crusades. Jean Reno and Alfred Molina are among the supporting actors, and the storyline is saturated with religious themes and debate; however, the final result feels disappointing. I believe Hanks struggles to provide the necessary weight to hold the story together effectively. Even his expressions of alarm feel unconvincing, and there’s a lack of connection between him and the capable Tautou. Bettany fares somewhat better, conveying a degree of fanatical intensity, and Reno consistently portrays the slightly unreliable French police officer well. Nevertheless, much of the film consists of dialogue lifted directly from Dan Brown's novel, and director Ron Howard appears to have forgotten that this is a visual experience, and it would be enjoyable for viewers to participate in some detective work themselves. The movie’s length isn’t inherently problematic; however, I found it overly descriptive because I wasn’t sufficiently engaged in the unfolding mystery.
