It feels almost self-indulgent to be writing this review, as I’ve been late to the party regarding The Da Vinci Code – I hadn't previously experienced either the film or the novel. I don’t intend to change that by reading the book anytime soon. But I wonder if anyone else could possibly find my thoughts useful. I generally found the movie quite frivolous. While it’s true that the source material was researched with about as much rigor as a typical documentary, and that the storyline is detailed and appropriately complicated for a suspenseful narrative—similar to a spy story in which the protagonists can never be certain of anyone's trustworthiness, and the quick answer appears to be “absolutely no one”—there are numerous unexpected turns, reversals, and discoveries, some clever but others entirely foreseeable. However, it quickly undermined its own believability when the actress portraying the female character performed a driving sequence involving high-speed reverse maneuvers through traffic that seemed physically impossible. Seriously? The film includes many action sequences, though they don’t have the energy or comedic elements found in a beloved classic like Raiders of the Lost Ark. I suppose religious matters are meant to be treated with gravity.
