The Da Vinci Code has Ron Howard as its director and Akiva Goldsman adapting Dan Brown’s novel into a screenplay. The cast includes Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, Paul Bettany, Jean Reno, Alfred Molina, and Jürgen Prochnow. Hans Zimmer composed the music, and Salvatore Totino was in charge of cinematography. After a man is found dead inside the Louvre with puzzling messages surrounding his body, American symbology expert Robert Langdon (Hanks) is brought in by law enforcement to decipher them. When he’s partnered with Parisian cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Tautou), it quickly becomes clear that things aren't what they appear and a mystery begins to unfold which has the potential to challenge core beliefs within Christianity. I watched the Extended Cut version on Blu-ray. I hadn’t read the book! And I enjoy movies about treasure hunts and solving clues! So, I went into Ron Howard’s very successful film (which made over $600 million worldwide) without any literary baggage and with only a basic idea of what to expect. Maybe that's why I seem to be in a small group of movie fans who genuinely liked it, despite the huge financial success. Ultimately, it’s conventional filmmaking, with a director and actors ensuring professionalism, but it delivers a mysterious journey full of cryptic clues, secret organizations, and concealed truths. There is definitely some silliness mixed in, which prevents the adaptation from being exceptionally intelligent. I understand why many find it overly talkative, but was it ever meant to be an action movie blockbuster for those who just want popcorn entertainment, like National Treasure? It’s a clever conspiracy thriller with plenty of twists and turns and a surprising reveal at the end. The acting is appropriate (serious and anxious), and when McKellen appears about an hour into the film, it elevates the quality somewhat, while Zimmer's score is a grand combination of choir, strings, and synthesizers. I still believe the movie didn’t deserve all the negative criticism it received, but again, I went in with no preconceived notions. I wasn’t swayed by any controversy or felt like a devoted follower of Dan Brown; I expected exactly what I got: a flawed but very intriguing adult mystery thriller, and not even Hanks’ hairstyle kept me from enjoying the film. 7/10
