This film easily ranks among my favorite movies of all time; it’s a cinematic accomplishment that I doubt anyone will surpass. Considering that this work was shot digitally in 2007, its quality is far beyond anything produced with computer graphics since then. For those who haven't experienced it: you should definitely watch it. Besides having a compelling narrative (with one significant problem), the film blurs the lines between illusion and reality. My respect for David Fincher is high, and I’m going to venture an opinion that he was probably aware of this issue but proceeded with the story as written anyway—I hope that's the case. Benjamin Button began life “old” and grew younger until his death as an infant. The problem with the storyline (and it's a considerable one) is that, as he regresses to youth, he also develops dementia, along with all of the aches and pains associated with old age. Ultimately, before dying, he loses his memory entirely. Logically, since he was born elderly, those ailments should have been present from birth and gradually improved as he grew younger. Instead, in the film, he's born with severe arthritis and can’t even walk until he is seven years old. So why would he experience these same symptoms again as a child nearing his death bed—or crib? He ought to be perfectly healthy as a child, then regress into a “fetus,” and simply vanish. Aside from that major flaw, this movie deserves a perfect score. However, because of the illogical way his life ends, I had to rate it 9 out of 10 stars. There’s one other plot point worth mentioning: if we tried to apply this scenario to real-world circumstances, Benjamin would have needed to be born a full-sized elderly man and then begun shrinking after seventy or eighty years. Since that's physically impossible, Benjamin had to be born old and small. This is another contradiction in the story because he’s small twice during his lifetime. We can’t get bogged down in this flaw, though, because if we did, it would stop us from enjoying anything else. To appreciate this film, you have to set aside all of the practicalities and logistics of the situation, and when you do, it takes you on a journey unlike any other ever filmed.
