I remember this one coming out in 1993; I was thirteen, and I became completely hooked on dark, suspenseful mysteries. My family really encouraged a fondness for pulp fiction writers like Sabitini, Leonard, Howard, and Hammett, and these kinds of movies felt like an extension of those books. The movie assembled a strong cast—Elwes, Silverstone, Rubin—which helped to compensate for any shortcomings in the writing. But the plot and its mysteries are where it falls short. To be honest, the story itself isn't very exciting. I understand if that bothers some people. Still, there’s enough suspense to make it enjoyable. The performances are good; they create the right atmosphere. It really struggles with the script, but even so, the basic idea has potential if it had been handled differently.
