This film, The Crucifixion, feels like a standard Horror offering and doesn't distinguish itself through any particular strengths. The picture presents a strange combination of aesthetics; rural Romanian settings are portrayed as almost medieval, yet the interiors seem to be from the nineteen forties. Characters operate modern vehicles but rely on older technology like flip phones, creating an unsettling and disconnected atmosphere. Only a small number of locations manage to avoid this feeling. The film's exploration of religious themes is handled in a heavy-handed way, missing opportunities for subtlety regarding the characters’ beliefs and reasons for acting as they do. Certain exchanges are so straightforward that they unintentionally come across as humorous. There isn’t much suspense to be found, and I suspect many audience members will anticipate the film's conclusion fairly early on, perhaps even before it reaches its midpoint. I would only suggest this movie to those who have a specific interest in Horror films dealing with religious or occult subjects.
