Like movies such as _The Punisher_ and _Mad Max_, _The Crow_ first appeared to me only four years ago, back when my DVD collection was just around 40 films (now it’s closer to 500). I had very little money at the time but wanted to expand my collection. A girl I'd met that day suggested buying it from Sanity – there used to be one in Civic – and since then, we've always planned to make our “Crow and Coffee” tradition (watching _The Crow_ while drinking lots of Ice Coffee & Bailey’s) a regular thing. I feel like I should have known about this film for much longer. It’s embarrassing within the Goth community to not have grown up with something so significant, and it's easy to see why. The movie combines some truly great bands (The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Violent Femmes, Pantera), features excellent actors, is based on one of the best comic books I’ve ever read, and its release was overshadowed by the death of Brandon Lee, the actor playing the lead character Eric Draven, son of martial arts master Bruce Lee. _The Crow_ is full of darkness and foreboding. Toward the end, Draven fights using a martial arts move that was performed in remembrance of Brandon Lee's father, Bruce Lee, when he used a similar style in _Enter the Dragon_, the last film his father ever starred in before his death. In another scene, Draven fills a gun barrel with metal and shoots it into a pawn shop. Sadly, Brandon Lee died on set during filming when a piece of metal became lodged in a gun that was then fired by a blank, fatally wounding him in the torso. Behind the scenes, on the first day of shooting, a carpenter suffered severe burns after his crane hit power lines. Later, a grip truck caught fire, an angry sculpting employee crashed his car through the set’s plaster shop, and another crew member accidentally impaled his hand with a screwdriver. According to Bruce Lee's biography, Brandon’s death was predicted by his father after waking from a coma; he supposedly foresaw it long before Brandon even considered acting. _The Crow_ isn’t unpredictable, quite the opposite, but it compensates for this in many ways! It has some of the best lines in film history and is both tough and surprisingly emotional. I can't think of many people who wouldn't enjoy at least a little bit of this dark film’s gothic atmosphere, gritty hopelessness, groundbreaking special effects, exciting action, and well-earned cult status. 91% –_Gimly_
