Wuchak on The Crooked Man

5/10 · May 3, 2019

This TV horror offering is fairly good, though it lacks a certain spark, with King Diamond serving as an inspiration for the monster’s appearance (in a way). The narrative centers on a young girl who bears the blame for a friend's passing at a slumber party—a tragedy actually perpetrated by a demonic being known as the Crooked Man. After six years, she moves back in with her father, only to find the creature has also returned, targeting everyone from that fateful night. Angelique Rivera portrays the central character, Cameron Jebo is cast as her police partner, and Michael Jai White embodies a figure connected to the demon’s release. Amber Benson appears as the mother of the deceased girl. “The Crooked Man” (2016) edges out other SyFy movies from around the same time, such as "The Hollow," "The Night Before Halloween," "Neverknock" and “Stickman,” because it's less flawed, and the confusing elements are easier to follow. The filmmakers treat everything with sincerity, which I appreciate, and the demonic creature is genuinely unsettling; he bears a striking resemblance to King Diamond, albeit elongated and unsteady in his signature hat. A further plus is the casting of Dia Frampton as Mia and Alexis Wilkins as Alice. Angelique's performance is adequate, but the plot doesn’t develop enough momentum for it to earn a better evaluation. It’s competently made considering its nature as a TV horror film, yet it required more energy and originality to elevate it beyond standard fare. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour, 27 minutes and was filmed in Southern California. GRADE: C+
