Stanley Baker delivers a solid performance as the wisecracking criminal "Bannion." Fresh out of prison, he concocts an elaborate scheme with some friends to steal £40,000 from a racetrack. He stashes the money in a secluded field, but his overconfidence allows the police to quickly locate him. Back behind bars, Bannion discovers that it’s not only law enforcement pursuing him; former partners, spearheaded by the pragmatic "Carter" (Sam Wanamaker), are also after the stolen funds! The situation becomes perilous for the prisoner, and so escaping swiftly to recover his money becomes a priority. Director Joseph Losey maintains a good rhythm throughout, and has gathered a talented group of supporting actors – notably Patrick Magee as the cunning and severe prison guard "Barrows," and Grégoire Aslan portraying the untrustworthy "Saffron." This narrative concerning avarice and violence slowly builds to an ending that is both thrilling and fairly satisfying. It occasionally feels a little long, but Baker successfully conveys a compelling blend of unpleasantness and integrity that carries the film for ninety minutes. The movie is definitely worth seeing and surpasses many others within this late 1950s British noir style.
