The Crawling Eye. This movie, based on the British television series The Trollenberg Terror from 1956, provides a lot of enjoyment and doesn’t warrant the negative reputation it sometimes gets among fans of science fiction. The story takes place in Switzerland and focuses on an alien creature residing within a radioactive cloud above the Trollenberg mountain. As people begin to die and climbers disappear, the United Nations dispatches a scientist to assist local researchers in attempting to unravel the enigma. The special effects have drawn criticism, and it's true that they aren’t impressive; however, they aren’t the worst examples of low-budget science fiction films from the 1950s. The rear projection is basic, but this aligns with the enjoyable nature of the genre and time period. Jimmy Sangster’s script, though, is well-constructed, resulting in intelligent dialogue and compelling scenes. The horror elements involve finding bodies without heads, and seeing previously rational individuals descend into madness as “the terror” exerts its influence. The human characters are bolstered by Janet Munro's exceptional performance as a telepathic young woman, which causes concern for those around her and places her in considerable danger. These psychological components distinguish the film as something worthwhile within its genre. Director Quentin Lawrence does an admirable job with the resources he has available; Forest Tucker portrays the hero with restraint, while Warren Mitchell serves as a good counterpart to Tucker and the Terror! It isn’t a truly exceptional movie, but it is quite good, hampered in certain technical areas, though other strengths compensate for its shortcomings. 7/10
